A young player can experience the same match as a game to understand or as an exam to survive. Adults influence that difference more than they sometimes realise.

01

The car ride home matters

The first ten minutes after a difficult match are rarely the ideal moment for tactical analysis. Emotion is still high and even useful feedback can feel like judgement.

Sometimes the best first question is simply whether the player wants to talk about the game now or later.

02

Protect ownership

Parents can provide structure, perspective and encouragement. The football journey still needs to feel like it belongs to the player.

When every result becomes a family emergency, the child can start carrying adult anxiety onto the pitch.

The aim is not to care less. It is to make your support easier for the player to carry.
